Hermes -> lyre -> Apollo
Orpheus = Apollo’s son?
OR his mother was the muse Caliope (sp?) and his father was Thracian prince
gift of music from his mother
he played comparably to the gods
sailed w/ Jason on the Argo
playing his lyre -> calmed when they were fighting, kept them from sailing towards the sirens
married Eurydice
she went to a meadow
got stung by a viper OR was fleeing from farmer who was trying to make advances on her
died
Orpheus wants to charm Hades and Persephone
Cerberus, Sisyphus, Furies, etc all charmed
convinced them to give her as long as he didn’t look back as they were going up
he exited, but she wasn’t out and she disappeared
OR forgot
OR couldn’t hear footsteps anymore
says a faint farewell
gods wouldn’t let him into the underworld again
roamed and played
band of mainads killed him bc he wouldn’t love another women
threw head into river
suicide first?
he washed up lesbian shores
Muses gathered his limbs/picked up head and buried him in tomb -> nightingales
