she feared getting involved w/ god/marrying
if involved w/ god -> would have to kill child, be exiled, or suffer wrath of othe rgods
Peneus (father) wanted her to marry
Apollo imagined her with nice hair/clothes
she saw him and ran away
realized she couldn’t escape
supplicated to father (river god) -> turned her into a laurel tree
Apollo said victors would be crowned with branches of tree

variations:
cupid - apollo taunted cupid for archery
Zeus changed her into a laurel

playing his lyre -> calmed when they were fighting, kept them from sailing towards the sirens
married Eurydice
she went to a meadow
got stung by a viper OR was fleeing from farmer who was trying to make advances on her
died
Orpheus wants to charm Hades and Persephone
Cerberus, Sisyphus, Furies, etc all charmed
convinced them to give her as long as he didn’t look back as they were going up
he exited, but she wasn’t out and she disappeared
OR forgot
OR couldn’t hear footsteps anymore
says a faint farewell
gods wouldn’t let him into the underworld again
roamed and played
band of mainads killed him bc he wouldn’t love another women
threw head into river
suicide first?
he washed up lesbian shores
Muses gathered his limbs/picked up head and buried him in tomb -> nightingales

Baucis and Philomen
Zeus having ambrosia
goes w/ hermes to pose as mortals
phyrigia
see what hospitality is like
poor wayfarers
ask for food and shelter
all denied except baucis and philomen
couch and blanket
prepared meal: pork and cabbage stew with raddishes and eggs
put glass under table leg
vinegar-like wine (diluted)
gods pleased
refilled wine
baucis and philomen realized
apologized and attempted to catch goose
flooded the rest of the town
hut -> temple made of marble with gold roof
can have any wish
wished to be priests of temple and wanted to die together
years later said farewells
changed into a linden tree and oak tree with same trunk

differences: baucis and philomen was the last one before they gave up
used twigs from roof to heat stew

Pygmalion: sculptor on Cyprus, “woman-hater”
decided never to marry, said his art was enough for him
made a statue of a woman:
couldn’t stop thinking about what he disapproved of
OR wanted to show women up by creating the perfect woman and show their deficiencies to men
beautiful nothing/no one had ever existed like her
he fell in love bc she was so life-like
supreme achievement of art: “the art of concealing art”
women had their revenge
he kissed/caressed her, but she didn’t respond
pretended she was alive
gave gifts “real maidens love”:

flowers

Ovid’s Metamorphosis:

One version said they also had a daughter named Metharme
